in the dining room, dusting

also passed Louise, but taciturnly so:

a found notice in yellowed newsprint
when the mahogany hutch was moved.

a heaving revelation so eagerly sought
has been muffled into musty silence:

an aroma of her, almost breathing.

  1. Gerry, this is one of my favorites so far. The title is perfect. This tension between revelation and concealment is like a tiny wince, not overstated: Something was moved, something was found, and something is muffled. I like that. the "almost breathing," the muffling of the breath, of the truth is constrictively powerful(if that makes sense). Which, according to my reading, is exactly the kind of tension a "heaving revelation" can produce. This is the danger of dusting.
